Who Uses The Web?

According to a market research report by DataQuest, the number of personal computers connected to the Internet will rise 71 percent this year to 82 million. Based on the CommerceNet/Nielson survey during the Spring of '97 we have an idea about the number and type of people that will view your Web Site.

  • Of the 220 million people over the age of 16 in the US & Canada:
    23% (50.6 million) are using the Internet.

  • 17% (37.4 million) are on the WWW.

  • 73% (27.3 million) of WWW users search for information about products and services.

  • 5.6 Million people or 15% have purchased online!

As the trends continue, well over 1/4 of all people in the US and Canada will be using the Internet by the end of '97. No other medium commands such vigorous growth.

With the fast growth of Internet users over the past two years, we are seeing more people depend on the web for information about products and services. Active web shoppers more than doubled in the 18 months prior to March '97, and one-third of all web users have made purchases based on Internet information. There is also a significant narrowing of the gap between the number of male and female users.

The Internet Strategies Manager for IBM, Tom Vassos, stated in his recent book Strategic Internet Marketing, "While the worldwide trade in Internet commerce was estimated to be a very small $400 million in 1995, it is expected that by the turn of the century it will have risen to $15 billlion".
